For those who read my recent post ‘In the Lands of the Gadsden Purchase’, here’s a photo of the Southern Pacific Depot at Lordsburg, New Mexico, taken at about the time my grandmother lived there when her father was stationmaster. Looks pretty bleak to me. But she remembered the excitement of the comings and goings, the sidewinders and scorpions, the wildflowers and the burnt rock hills blanketed in winter snows. She arrived there when New Mexico was still a territory and not yet a state.
